Because of the importance of plants in all aspects of life (e.g. breathing, food and clothes), botanists are always looking for new plant species, and learning how plants function and interact with each other and the environment.
This knowledge is used to better conserve existing species, develop new varieties of plants, increase the productivity of crop plants (e.g. grains, vegetables, fruit) and restore land degraded by erosion or mining. This course will prepare you well to participate in teaching and research in all aspects related to plant biology.
Course outline
The Master of Science (Botany) consists of four coursework units (50%) and a research dissertation (50%).
The coursework component may be selected from a wide variety of units including Conservation Biology and Restoration Ecology, Ecosystem Biogeochemistry, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Physiological Ecology, Australian Vegetation, Integrated Pest Management and Molecular Genetics in Managed and Natural Systems.

Admission requirements
Domestic students
- A relevant bachelor’s degree with honours of this University, with a weighted average of at least 60 per cent in those units for which the results contribute to the calculation of the honours classification, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty
or
- a relevant bachelor’s degree of this or another recognised university, and
- a relevant Graduate Diploma of this University with an average mark of at least 60 per cent, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty.
