Bachelor of Science (three-year program)

A program in a Bachelor of Science is a defined course of study. Your selection of units is more strictly prescribed than a foundation package with majors, but you do get some choice.

A program leads to a named degree, such as the BSc (Physical Science). Some programs can lead to majors also available in the BSc foundation package, but others have special majors not otherwise available, such as neuroscience.

Many programs encourage interdisciplinary studies, but do not fit into the structure of combined courses.

The BSc (Advanced Science Program) is for high achievers who want an accelerated or enriched science course.

Difference between major and program

A good example of this is genetics. You can complete a major in genetics in the BSc course with a foundation package, or you can complete the BSc (Genetics) degree through a program. For the foundation package with majors, you only need to study the essential units to gain a major in genetics. However, a program ensures that almost all your units support your chosen field.

In many cases, you can move from a foundation package to a program in the same area after your first year, or enrol in a program and then switch to a foundation package later.
