Master of Science (Ore Deposit Geology and Evaluation)

What is ore deposit geology and evaluation?

With world-class ore bodies becoming more difficult to find, there is an increasing recognition that geologists will require new approaches and skills in order to discover new deposits.  Ore deposit geology covers a spectrum of economic geology topics specifically related to the discovery and evaluation of ore deposits:

  • ore deposit models
  • computer-aided targeting
  • structural and field geology
  • exploration geophysics
  • regolith chemistry
  • 3D visualisation of ore bodies
  • geostatistics
  • the business and financial management of exploration

What does the course involve?

The course can be completed as coursework only (8 units), coursework and minor research thesis (6 coursework units), or coursework and major research thesis (3 coursework units).

Fifteen units are offered jointly between four institutions participating in the National Minerals Geoscience Masters programme, and students can study units offered at any of these institutions (the host institution will cover the cost of an airfare to another institution for this purpose).

The course is 18 months full time or up to five years part time, and students can take a year off during the course if work commitments require it.

How will studying this course help my career prospects?

This course will help geologists in mineral exploration and mining to upgrade their knowledge, stay in touch with the latest advances in economic geology, and become familiar with the latest methods in the field.  This level of knowledge and skills will support your advancement to more challenging positions requiring a higher level of geological knowledge.
