BSc/BCom
Environmental officer
Rottnest Island Authority
I was lucky enough to complete a third-year geography internship with the Rottnest Island Authority, which led to six months of work experience.
I made sure that I was in the right place at the right time and slowly worked my way into the job I wanted.
Aside from the bonus of visiting Rottnest daily and swimming during my lunch break, the best part of my job is its diversity and location.
I may go snorkeling to collect marine critters for an education activity one day and be out rehabilitating eroded dunes or helping trap reptiles the next.
My position includes dealing with “exciting” issues like waste management, there are always opportunities to get out in the field and do some “real” environment work.
At UWA I gained a Bachelor of Science, as well as a Bachelor of Communication. I also did International Politics, because it made me question how international conflicts were portrayed in the media and dig beyond the coverage in The West Australian.
