I have done a number of things and worked in different places throughout my career, including Kalgoorlie, Brazil and Pittsburgh.

I found that without a doubt, the scientific skills I acquired at university have been most important to me in my career. Learning how to think, how to propose a hypothesis and test it by experiment, and how to simplify things are all important and applicable to all aspects of work and life.

In my current position as Vice President, Alcoa Refining - Atlantic I have accountability for six alumina refineries and their associated mines in the Alcoa system. This accountability extends to quantity, quality and cost of current and future production, facilities planning, Environment, Health and Safety, and people development. The refineries are located in Brazil (2), Suriname, Jamaica, USA and Spain. I work out of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
