Geografia
Initially I was more focused on the hard sciences, such as geology and chemistry.
However, the flexibility of a science degree allowed me to explore other options and I gravitated towards the social sciences. I went on to complete a PhD.
My most satisfying moment to date was when, as Community Infrastructure Planner with City of Gosnells, I oversaw the construction of a two hectare wetland which was built at no cost to the local community by exchanging sand fill for services with a road building company. It is now a major ecological and recreational reserve
These days I run a geography consultancy (Geografia) specialising in urban and regional planning, data analysis, GIS mapping, economic development, social policy and sustainability.
As an individual trained in the discipline of geography, the mostly invaluable skill I gained at University was the ability to think critically about how major social, economic and environmental issues interrelate. Understanding these relationships is fundamental to sound the critical questions of human settlement.
